Main Research Areas:

(1) Biomedical Informatics

Biomedical informatics mainly makes use of computer technology to integrate multi-scale biomedical information in order to carry out researches about medical informatics, digital medical technology and systems, medical big data analysis, Artificial Intelligence in medicine, clinical decision support, medical semantics, medical knowledge graphs, multi-parameter biomedical modeling and simulation and so on. Biomedical informatics solves biomedical researches and provides solutions for clinical applications on molecule level, individual level and colony level. Such discipline also developed a new generation of medical information system for the world’s first ten thousand tons’ hospital ship - the Peace Ark (also known as Type 920 Hospital Ship), and the new system supports the Peace Ark participate in several rescue missions and drills.

(2) Biomedical Sensors and Medical Instrumentation

The research of Biomedical Sensors mainly investigates biomedical information recording and detection technologies, which includes biomimetic sensing technology, micro-nano sensing technology, cell sensing technology, smell and taste sensing technologies, implantable and wearable multi-parameter network sensing and detection technologies. In the field of medical instrumentation, it mainly develops biomedical imaging systems, physiological signal analysis equipment, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular physiological signal detection technology and instruments, biochemical and physiological diagnostic instruments, intelligent rehabilitation devices, aerospace monitoring instruments and marine environmental monitoring instruments and food safety monitoring instruments.

(3) Biomedical Imaging and Neural Engineering

In the field of biomedical imaging, we are developing quantitative and precise multi-modal MRI techniques, as well as translating these techniques to clinical and basic science applications. Based on the cutting-edge 3T and 7T human scanner platform, we aim to become one of the world-leading imaging centers in the coming years. The research focuses of the Neural Engineering include development of novel techniques for brain information extraction and analysis; multimodal brain connectome investigation and clinically translational studies; next-generation brain-computer interface (BCI); and advanced brain modulation systems, aiming for better revealing of the neural mechanisms of cognitive functions and neural substrates underpinning various psychological and/or psychiatric diseases. Through combining advanced neuroscience and neuroimaging analysis methods as well as modern information technology, the ultimate research objective is to provide nascent insights to assist the prognosis, diagnosis, intervention, as well as treatment of various brain diseases.

(4) Biomedical Materials and Cell Engineering

The vast majority of recent biomedical materials research focuses on the development of new, smart and multi-functional structures centering on drug delivery and composite scaffold, patient specific and healthcare applications. The researches on Cell Engineering are focusing on Cardiovascular Diseases and Diabetes, to develop novel fluorescent markers and high-resolution imaging methods, to employ Optogenetics and Synthetic Biology technologies, to rewire and quantitative control cellular signaling, and fulfill manipulation of protein activity and real-time imaging of cellular dynamics.
